Recipes from Aunt Catherine Gaver
This book is compiled from three generations of recipes that have been used by my Aunt Catherine Gaver.
Aunt Catherine passed away on September 19, 1971 at the age of 65. Behind her she left literally hundreds of recipes. Her cooking has been highly praised throughout our family farm and the community where she lived. Her ability to flavor her cooking to suit the taste will certainly be missed.
I have been using Aunt Catherine's recipes since my husband [Pete Leggett] and I started farming in 1944. Our children and grandchildren are now cooking with the same recipes for their families. God Bless!

More About Charlotte Leggett and Farm Life Cooking

"Known for living off the land and doing things that harked back to a simpler time, Charlotte’s life revolved around taking care of people, including her family and extended family and making do with what they had.

As the family recall their favorite dishes, the word “best” is used for all of them: grape jam, fried chicken, lettuce salad with her cooked dressing and more. Charlotte collected dandelion greens that she topped with her bacon dressing, picked wine berries for jam and fried pumpkin blooms dipped in pancake batter, then in powdered sugar.

Charlotte loved picking morel mushrooms, which she sautéed in butter and put in scrambled eggs.
Old-fashioned living

The Leggetts lived life the old-fashioned way. During their 59-year marriage, until her husband’s death from cancer in 2004, they didn’t have an indoor bathroom, using an outhouse instead.

“Everything was cooked the old-fashioned way. She lived a long life on hog lard,” said Craig, noting that her aunts and uncles lived into their 100s.

Every Sunday, Charlotte fried chicken for the family. Holiday traditions included Easter eggs with Charlotte dying brown eggs by soaking them overnight with yellow onion skins, then polishing them to a shine with lard and a cloth."
